A HISTORY OF ISLAND VILLAGE
The 1990’s was a time when there was a large expansion of housing developments on Amelia Island. Many subdivisions, including Island Village were developed then. A group of businessmen from Jacksonville, led by William Howell and Michael Antonopoulos purchased the land and began development in 1996. The first change was digging the pond. This was a requirement of the State for water management. The pond is approximately 20 feet deep and is below the natural water table. Although the level of water in the pond varies with rainfall its depth has resulted in a pond that retains water during periods of drought. Privacy fencing was installed along Lime Street by the developer although the fence is not on common property. The developers contracted Atlantic Builders, also from Jacksonville, to build the housing units. The first unit completed was 2059-2061 Village Lane. This was used as the model home and sales office. As the model this unit was given more decorative details which are easily seen in the gingerbread trim. Atlantic Builders built the majority of the units in Island Village. The units were not all built at the same time so there are variations on both the exterior and interior of the units. The 3 bedroom units show a great deal of variation on the second floor.
The first homeowners moved into Island Village in 1998. Shortly thereafter the Island Village Owners Association was functioning. Very few changes have taken place to the original property. One exception is lighting. The Association arranged for street lights to be added to Village Lane. Two years later homeowners complained that it was difficult to see the entrance to Island Village at night. A street light was then added on Citrona to provide light at the entrance. Individual homes have been repainted but the overall feel of Island Village has remained constant and inviting.
